Get Up Go Outside - Everyday Adventures 11
Summer is finally here and with it our first family holiday with Betty.
Again I’ve not done very well sticking to these monthly updates. Life with a new dog has been busy and writing became a bit of an after thought. I’ve noticed a trend, each year being motivated to write in the new year and before it starts to dwindle as we get into summer and I spend more time outdoors. It’s been a strange old summer so far. Relentless rain with the odd scorching day in the sun sprinkled in.
Alas, I’ll try to do better. Here’s what I’ve been up to over the past two months.
Betty’s First Holiday
We’ve just got back from a few days camping in the Diesel (our 20 year old transit camper) on the Norfolk Coast. Not my typical all out, action packed adventure, but a nice little break with the family. Sitting on sunny beaches eating ice cream and going for a gentle stroll up the coast as the sun sets. I did manage to get in a sunset swim, spotted a few seals and visited a 900 year old tree that was about during the battle of Hastings! Overall, a much needed break and plenty of time outside relaxing.
Back on the Bike
I’ve barely touched my bike since returning from my eventful cycle of the NC500 last October. Watching the Tour de France over the past month got me back in the mood to spinning some pedals, so I went out for a quick 7 mile ride on my day off to dust off the cobwebs.
Nature Photography
If photography and spending time in nature happens to be two of your hobbies, then the Wylder app could be perfect for you. A daily prompt gives you the perfect excuse to go outside and pay some closer attention to nature. I’ve been using it during my dog walks to be a little more immersed in my surroundings as we trundle through the fields.
When I find myself with free time that isn’t spent outdoors, I usually end up reading or watching other people spend their time outside. Here are a few things that have taken my interest recently:
How do Trig Points Work? - You’ve probably seen these white little towers atop hills in the countryside. Most people use them as a marker for their hikes these days, but that wasn’t their initial purpose.
Countryside Code - As we get into summer, more people are spending time outside in nature which is great. However, a few bad apples poor practise get the media’s attention which they use as a stick to beat us back into our urban dwellings. If your visiting the beautiful countryside the UK offers, then make sure to follow the Countryside Code and it give it the respect it deserves so we can all enjoy it together.
Being Different - Looking for some motivation to go on that dream adventure?
My Fishing Life by Ashley Mullenger is the story of the first ever female fisherman to win the Fisherman of the Year award. In her book she shares her experiences out at sea, how she left the rat race to find her purpose in life. An insightful look into the work of small boat fishing in the UK, whilst sharing emotional and light-hearted tales of life at sea.
