So this month has been a strange month. I’ve not done many little adventures because, for half of the month, I have been away on a big adventure. When you work full time, your big adventures are limited to when you can book annual leave and I used 12 days of mine to go find an adventure.
Bikepacking the NC500
For the first time in 5 years, I packed my bags onto my bike and took a train to Scotland to cycle the NC500 route around the highlands. Things didn’t quite go to plan however… A freakishly bad storm brought my trip to an early end. You can catch my video about the trip on my Youtube Channel, or read my blog post about what went wrong!
Returning to Parkrun
Back in 2017 when my local Parkrun opened, I was a big fan. Most Saturday mornings I was down the park with a couple of hundred people getting a 5k run done before breakfast. It’s been over a year since I ran a Parkrun, so this Saturday just gone I laced my trainers up and went and found a new course to explore.
When I find myself with free time that isn’t spent outdoors, I usually end up reading or watching other people spend their time outside. Here are a few things that have taken my interest recently:
The YouTube algorithm brought me to this one. Four female athletes take on an adventure of a lifetime as they climb and ski epic first descents on Baffin Island, Canada. Check the 30-minute documentary out here.
James Lloyd finished his year-long adventure walking the coast of Britain to raise money for Mind. Check out some of the stats from his walk here.
My 80-year-old neighbour has just completed a 100-mile hike of the Leicestershire Round to raise money for a local children’s hospice, Rainbows. Age didn’t stop him from completing the route over 22 days. You can donate to his fundraising on his Just Giving Page.
I got back around to reading a book this month, mainly thanks to a 15-hour train ride to Inverness!
Barefoot Britain tells the story of adventurer Anna McNuff as she attempts to run 100 marathons across Britain without any shoes on. Stopping off at different girl-guiding groups along the way, she inspires the next generation of female adventures as she tells tales of naughty tarmac, roadkill misfortune and how anything is possible if you put your mind to it. Anna’s light-hearted and funny anecdotes follow her across Britain on her adventure.
