Get Up Go Outside - Everyday Adventures 16
December ebbed away and the new year is here before we knew it. A look back on the end of 2024, and plans for 2025!
We’ve wound our way in to 2025 and with it some time to reflect on the previous year, whilst making plans for the new one. 2024 certainly brought some adventures with the addition of our van and plenty of weekends away camping. What’s your plans for 2025?
Here are a few small adventures I’ve been on over the past month:
A Birthday Trip to the Peak District
Following on from last years trip with friends to the Peak District, I was back again this year. A night with friends in Edale Hostel. We initially had a couple of days of hiking planned but severe weather warnings put a stop to that so we made do with a trek along the trails into the village pub. The wind did calm down enough in the morning for a hike up to Surprise View before the drive home.
A New Year Walk
A walk around a local park has become a New Years Day tradition for us and nothing changed this year. A couple of miles around Fosse Meadows to ease in the new year. Navigating muddy fields, pine woods and an army of dog walkers all out enjoying the fresh air as well.
A New Year’s Resolution
I did a terrible job at keeping to any new years resolutions last year… Perhaps aiming too big and then feeling guilty when life got in the way. It’s all part of trying to navigate between work, life and adventure. I’ve been a little more realistic this year and am just aiming to spend a small amount of time each day doing something outdoors. The last couple of days have been full of early morning walks and a few attempts to get back into running. I’ll be sharing some of my daily adventure over on BlueSky, so give me a follow to keep up.
2025’s Adventures
I’ve taken the time over the Christmas break to plan out some adventure I’d like to go on this year:
Run the Leicestershire 3 Peaks, a 16 mile loop over the 3 highest points of Leicestershire Bradgate Park, Beacon Hill and Bardon Hill.
Hike the 36-mile Ashby Way.
Skiing in Vysoke in February.
A weekend hiking in Oberstdorf, Germany.
A 5k open water swim.
A night away in the van once a month.
When I find myself with free time that isn’t spent outdoors, I usually end up reading or watching other people spend their time outside. Here are a few things that have taken my interest recently:
I’ve picked my 5 Favourite Photos From 2025 on my photography Substack Adventure Lens.
WillNE took on the challenge of Running 1 Meter Everyday, But Everyday It Doubles until he ran all the way from London to Brighton.
Would you take a group of strangers hiking? Courtney Eve White did just that, taking a group of 10 complete strangers on an overnight hike in Australia.
Mitch Hutch is completing a 12,000km triathlon to Mount Everest, where he will finish on the worlds highest peak. You can follow his adventure on his YouTube Channel.
After failing to read a single book last month… I’ve started 2025 well and read two already!
Strong Winds Are Forecast is the story of author Nick Ray’s 1850-mile kayak trip around Scotland as he visits every RNLI Lifeboat Station. Through his witty tales of life on the sea, he describes the beauty of the Scottish Coast and the important work that the RNLI do to keep people safe so they too can enjoy the freedom of the sea.
His story is engaging throughout as he details the challenges he faced with logistics of the trip, the physical feat of kayaking for hours each day and the task of dealing with Scotland’s famous bad weather.
